If you move in certain circles you might aware of that the artist Hidden Eloise has had some of her artwork plargiarised by Paperchase. The resulting artwork from Paperchase is not only aesthetically but morally UGLY!
Her attempts to contact Paperchase have been met with derision – they state that the the “feel” of the two pieces of artwork are different and so give them the right in their view to continue selling the items in question.
To take legal recourse against a company of this size is impossible, no individual, especially in this ecomony has the tens of thousands of pounds necessary to retain a lawyer.
The sad thing is that this is not the first time this has happened (http://www.ladyluckrulesok.com/journal/2010/01/artwork_theft.php) and by no means will be the last, and alot of independent designer/makers out there are again going to be worried about who will be next. And remember this is not a minor annoyance for them, it is potentially livelihood destroying.
It sickens me to see the number of ambulance chasing, have you been injured in an accident that was not your fault ads, and not once do we see lawyers clamouring to help protect what is left of the UK’s once proud design and manufacturing heritage.
You can show your distain for this kind of behaviour by emailing Paperchase, – although what this might achieve is questionable, or by supporting designers by buying handmade and buying directly from the person who put in all the hardwork in the first instance.
Eloise’s shop is here http://www.etsy.com/shop/hidenseek where you will find beautiful artwork with far more soul than what Paperchase is hawking.
And while you are on Etsy, use the shop local function to find more UK based sellers, or search for ‘UK’.
