Brain Food

I am making an effort to start reading again. This is requires a fair amount of energy since the succubus known as Amelia has to ability to cause me to flop on the sofa and fall asleep by about 4 in the afternoon. I usually manage to come to in time, and enough to berate her for clambering on the back of the arm chair in search of dvds.

I am supposed to be attempting the Austen challenge and so far I have managed to watch about 15 minutes of the Joe Wright Pride and Prejudice at which point no amount of lovely music could overcome my dislike of the movie. I ended up and watched the 1995 BBC version instead. And then had a lengthy discussion with Lisa as to why the latter was my favourite.

I did also watch the 2007 Northanger Abbey adaption but having not read the book I don’t feel I am yet in a position to pass judgement on it either way.

As you may have inferred by this stage I’m not reading any Austen, nor have I started Jasper Fforde’s Shades of Grey which I ordered last week. Instead, after watching Disney’s Hercules and getting mildly riled by the disregard paid to the source material (only mildly as I do realise that it is Disney; they are hardly going to stick to the original source material for their plots, otherwise Snow White certainly would not have been suitable viewing for children), I pulled down my shamefully unread copy of Graves’ The Greek Myths.

I’m clearly a more grown up reader, as I made a point of not skipping the forward or introduction. I found them both thoroughly fascinating, mused on this point and then promptly fell asleep. I’ve so far managed to read four creation myths, and have about 700 pages still to go.

This is now the point where this post tails off as I start to feel sleepy and would like to get a few more pages read before I pass out ;-)
