Today’s On This Day treasury celebrates a number of achievements and events among them:
- Mozart completes his Symphony no. 40. KV. 550
- Louise Brown the world’s first test tube baby is born.
- Louis Blériot makes the first flight across the English Channel in a heavier-than-air machine in 37 minutes.
- An atomic bomb is detonated underwater in the lagoon of Bikini atoll.
The birth of Louise Brown is the event which has the most significance for me. The two doctors who pioneered and carried out the IVF treatment which led to her birth, Steptoe and Edwards, opened the Bourn Hall Clinic in Cambridgeshire where I underwent two cycles of IUI which resulted in the oft mentioned Amelia.
